The Department of Justice is suing the state over its new voting law.
The Justice Department says it's filed suit against both the state and the Secretary of State over what it calls "certain restrictive voting procedures imposed by Texas Senate Bill 1. "

Attorney General Ken Paxton says the bill is a needed one - and says ensuring Texas has safe, secure, and transparent elections is a top priority.  He adds - quote - "I will see you in court, Biden!"

Governor Greg Abbott has also joined the conversation via Twitter, telling the DOJ to "Bring it," and further says the new Texas voting law is legal as it increases the hours people have to cast their vote while restricting "illegal mail ballot voting."

The DOJ released a statement earlier today regarding the impending lawsuit. "Our democracy depends on the right of eligible voters to cast a ballot and to have that ballot counted," Attorney General Merrick B. Garland said. "The Justice Department will continue to use all the authorities at its disposal to protect this fundamental pillar of our society."

According to the statement, Texas Senate Bill 1 violates "Section 208 of the Voting Rights Act and Section 101 of the Civil Rights Act of 1964."
