'We look sharp in those cavalcades,' the president said

In a move that critics see as very coded for Marie Antoinette and "let them eat cake," the Trump Administration ordered 250 Cadillac Escalades to be delivered to the White House. On one hand, they're made in the USA. On the other, many Americans are struggling to afford groceries and gas and healthcare without using credit cards.

President Donald Trump announced the purchase of 250 Cadillac Escalades for the White House, costing over $22 million, at a time when gas prices have increased by almost a dollar a gallon since he took office.

He also told citizens about it during a speech in Detroit that often veered off topic.

“We ordered 250 Escalades. That’s how we look sharp in those cavalcades, you know,” Trump said during a rambling, hour-long address at a General Motors facility.

“We look sharp in those Escalades. Our guys are very spoiled. They’re very spoiled. They like the Escalade. So do I.”

Trump's speech in Michigan veered from $22 million in luxury vehicles to transgender rights, Marxist protesters, and false claims of being awarded "Man of the Year" in Michigan.

Many saw the extravagant spending on Escalades and Trump's focus on personal accolades and looking fly in contrast with the economic challenges faced by many Americans.

"I’d like to think I would look sharp in an Escalade. But, like most people in the US, I cannot afford one: especially if, as seems likely, the White House orders the armored version of the SUV, which can cost more than $300,000. And then, of course, I’d have to fill the 24-gallon gas tank.," a columnist wrote in The Guardian.

the Angry Staffer account wrote on X, “Hey I know inflation is out of control and a lot of folks can’t afford basic necessities, but at least we’re tackling waste fraud and abuse by buying… *checks notes* 250 Escalades for the government.”

On the other side there's a lens that acknowledges it's an honor for a flee of vehicles made in the Motor City to 'look sharp' carrying some of the most influential people in the world.

“Thank you to the auto workers, the technicians, the mechanics, the welders, the engineers at General Motors,” Trump said. “There’s no finer group of people. It was workers like you who built this country, and now it’s the men and women like you who are making it bigger, better, richer and stronger than ever before.”
