Former President Donald Trump spoke at a rally in Greenwood, Nebraska on Sunday where he defended and voiced his support for a Nebraska gubernatorial candidate who was accused last month of groping seven women.

Charles Herbster has denied all allegations from the Nebraska Examiner's report on April 14, in which seven women, including Sen. Julie Slama (R-Neb.), accused him of groping and inappropriately touching them at political events or beauty pageants.

Trump called the allegations against Herbster "malicious," and went on say that one of his main reasons for visiting Nebraska was to defend him.

"He's been badly maligned and it's a shame," Trump said, according to CNN.

"That's why I came out here," Trump said, according to the Lincoln Journal Star. "I defend people when I know they're good. He's a good man. He was with us from the beginning ... he's an innocent human being."

Trump went on to say that the media and radical left are "doing everything they can to stop" Herbster.

"Charles W. Herbster will never bend to the RINOs, the media, or the radical left," Trump said. "That's why they're doing everything they can to stop him. Malicious charges to derail him long enough that the election can go by before the proper defense can be put forward."

The former president then added that Herbster "is a fine man" and mentioned how he easily could have been golfing instead of going to Nebraska to support the GOP candidate.

"But he's already got the proper defense. He doesn't even know about this stuff. That's the proper defense," Trump said. "Charles is a fine man. And he's innocent of these despicable charges. I could've gotten out of this one real easy. I could have played golf. I could have gone to the beach. And I'm here with Charles W. Herbster."

Trump spoke for about two hours in front of a crowd of more than 3,000 people. Herbster spoke for just about 25 minutes, and said that people are trying to "scare" him out of the race for governor.

"The establishment has taken control of the state of Nebraska and the Nebraska Republican Party and they are trying to scare me out of this race," Herbster said.

"It's not going to happen."

Nebraska's gubernatorial primary elections begin on May 10, as a recent poll conducted by Data Targeting for Neilan Strategy Group from April 19-20 showed that state Sen. Brett Lindstrom led with 28% of the votes, according to the Omaha World-Herald. Herbster was in second with 26% of the votes, with Jim Pillen close behind in third with 24% of the votes.
