Former President Donald Trump is once again sharing his thoughts on the Senate’s bipartisan immigration bill, saying that it would be a “Death Wish” for the GOP.
Trump shared his thoughts on his social media platform, Truth Social, criticizing the bill hours after it was released. The bill did have bipartisan support in the Senate, receiving approval from Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnel and being penned in part by Sen. James Lankford (R-OK).
Still, Trump does not appear to be supportive of the measure, nor do House Republicans.
“Only a fool, or a Radical Left Democrat, would vote for this horrendous Border Bill, which only gives Shutdown Authority after 5000 Encounters a day when we already have the right to CLOSE THE BORDER NOW, which must be done,” Trump said.
Trump went on to say that the bill would only benefit those across the aisle.
“This Bill is a great gift to the Democrats, and a Death Wish for The Republican Party. It takes the HORRIBLE JOB the Democrats have done on Immigration and the Border, absolves them, and puts it all squarely on the shoulders of Republicans,” Trump wrote. “Don’t be STUPID!!! We need a separate Border and Immigration bill. It should not be tied to foreign aid in any way, shape or form!”
Included in the legislation is $20 billion for border security, temporary power for the federal government to expel migrants when the average number of daily crossings exceeds a set threshold of 5,000, an end to “catch and release,” heightened standards for asylum screenings, and other provisions.
The bill also includes $60 billion in aid for Ukraine, $14.1 billion for Israel, and some for the nation’s Indo-Pacific allies.
House Speaker Mike Johnson said that the bill was dead on arrival in the House, with House Majority Leader Steve Scalise saying the legislation would not even receive a vote.
“I’ve seen enough. This bill is even worse than we expected and won’t come close to ending the border catastrophe the President has created. As the lead Democrat negotiator proclaimed: Under this legislation, ‘the border never closes.’ If this bill reaches the House, it will be dead on arrival,” Johnson said in a statement on X.
