An extraordinary piece of U.S. history has emerged, with an expected auction price of $20 million.

This signed copy of the U.S. Constitution is one of only eight printed in 1787 and was intended for delegates at the Constitutional Convention; it was recently found in a North Carolina home.

The family, stewards of the Hayes Plantation for seven generations, discovered the document during a massive cleanout while transferring the property to the state for preservation.

Andrew Brunk, CEO of Brunk Auctioneers, noted that while the opening bid is set at $1 million, the final price could soar given another signed copy recently sold for a staggering $42.3 million at Sotheby’s.

Passed down through generations at the historic Hayes Plantation in Edenton, North Carolina.

Hayes Plantation sits on property purchased in 1765 by Samuel Johnston, who in 1787-1789 was Governor of North Carolina.

He presided over North Carolina’s conventions where the Constitution was ratified. The main house at Hayes was completed by Johnston’s son in 1817 and is a National Historic Landmark.
