U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) said she is “very frustrated” following an incident that led her 20-year-old son to face a second child abuse charge.
Before we get into the latest incident, let’s catch up on Boebert, a 39-year-old MAGA Republican who was first elected to congress in 2020. She was the owner of Shooter’s Grill – a Second Amendment-themed restaurant in Rifle, Colo., where staff open-carried firearms – from 2013 until its closure in 2022, according to the Post Independent.
Boebert is also the mother of four sons and one grandson. She was previously married to Jayson Boebert.
While they were divorcing in 2023, Boebert made headlines for getting kicked out of a performance of the musical “Beetlejuice” in Denver, Colo. The Colorado Sun reported that video showed Boebert and a male companion (not Jayson) vaping and disturbing other audience members inside the theater. It also appeared to show the companion groping Boebert during the performance.
“There’s no perfect blueprint for going through a public and difficult divorce, which over the past few months has made for a challenging personal time for me and my entire family,” she said after the incident. “I’ve tried to handle it with strength and grace as best I can, but I simply fell short of my values… that’s unacceptable and I’m sorry.”
In June 2024, Jayson Boebert pleaded guilty to one count of reckless endangerment and was sentenced to unsupervised probation related to two incidents reported that January, CBS News said. One incident was related to Lauren Boebert and the other was related to their son, Tyler Boebert.
That February, Tyler Boebert was arrested following a string of vehicle trespass and property thefts, according to the Rifle Police Department. He faced five felony charges.
Fast forward to this weekend, when Tyler was at home watching the 2-year-old boy at Rep. Boebert’s home. Boebert often takes her grandson with her to Washington D.C. and around her district in Colorado, but this time he stayed home when she went to an event on Sunday.
According to 9News, the toddler wandered out of her house – which is near a lake in Windsor, Colo. – for the second time in seven months. Thankfully, a woman found and secured him, and authorities were called as a precaution.
Tyler has now been cited on a misdemeanor charge of child abuse without injury, said 9News, citing the Windsor Police Department. He’s already expected to face a trial in April on the same charge for a similar incident last summer. At that time, his mother said it was a “one-time incident.”
In response to the incident this Sunday, Boebert told 9News there’s “no excuse” for it and that she’s “very frustrated this happened.”
