Lawmakers in Austin are getting paid overtime every time they meet in special session and it's costing Texas taxpayers millions of dollars.

According to estimates from several state leaders, each special session costs roughly $1.2 million, and taxpayers foot the bill. The money is already in the state budget waiting to be spent.

The money goes to pay lawmakers an extra $221 a day for each extra day they work. The money is meant to cover additional costs for food and housing, other expenses include pay for staff, security, and utilities.

Each special session lasts 30 days. Gov. Greg Abbott (R) called a historic fourth special session on Tuesday and said he's not afraid to call a fifth if lawmakers don't approve border security measures and a school voucher plan.
