From Abraham Lincoln's magnanimity to Theodore Roosevelt's innovative thinking, we can learn a lot from our best presidents.

Dallas-based author and presidential historian Talmage Boston has recently released his new book titled "How the Best Did It: Leadership Lessons from Our Top Presidents." Through meticulous research and analysis, Boston delves into the essential leadership traits exhibited by eight of the most revered U.S. presidents and offers insights on how these traits can be applied to modern leadership challenges.

In an exclusive interview with KRLD's John Liddle, Boston shared his inspiration for writing the book.

"I'm a missionary for history and appreciating history," Boston said. "History to me is particularly important because it can actually be applied to daily living within the right context."

His goal is to inspire and guide current and aspiring leaders to hone their skills and become better leaders by drawing from the examples set by iconic American presidents.

The book features in-depth profiles of key leadership traits displayed by leaders such as Lincoln, Washington, both Roosevelts, Eisenhower, Kennedy, and Reagan. Each chapter explores the most pivotal leadership qualities of a president, with a "mini workbook" of reflective questions for readers to assess their own leadership practices. Boston emphasizes that the purpose of the book is to not only impart historical knowledge but also to encourage readers to apply these lessons to their daily lives.

Reflecting on Abraham Lincoln's leadership trait of magnanimity, Boston said, "He never let criticism or personal attacks distract him from his monumental goals. He stood above the fray and exhibited remarkable self-discipline in the face of adversity, a rare quality in today's political landscape."

The selection of the eight presidents featured in the book was based on the C-SPAN presidential ranking poll, with Boston making a slight tweak to include Ronald Reagan in the lineup. He aims to present a balanced perspective that resonates with readers across political affiliations.

"I wanted to demonstrate that leaders in both parties have traits worthy of emulation," Boston expressed. "And that message needs to be embraced as we try to heal the rampant polarization sapping our nation's strengths."

Reflecting on Theodore Roosevelt's presidency, Boston honed in on his innovation.

"The lesson for leaders in any arena, whether running companies or nonprofits, is to keep their eyes open to new opportunities that require their input in order to drive progress," Boston said.

The journey of writing the book was not without its challenges. Boston worked diligently to ensure that the book provided distinct perspectives on each president's leadership traits without duplicating ideas. He aimed to equip readers with a diverse array of leadership qualities to inspire personal growth and development.
