Texas Governor Greg Abbott spoke today from Dallas regarding the recent surge of migrants at the southern border, and the arrival of 3,000 migrant children that are to be housed in North Texas.
With at least three current holding sites being used in Texas, and "many more" to come, the Governor says the federal agencies that should be leading this charge to stem the flow of unaccompanied minors are not ready.
"The Biden administration is completely not prepared for the number of children coming across the border" said Abbott.
Abbott says at least 11,000 minors have been caught illegally crossing into Texas this year. He says the numbers of children coming to the US through Texas has increased 60% last month alone.
There are concerns among officials that many of the children coming across can easily fall victim to gangs and even sex trafficking operators.
The Governor's Child Sex Trafficking Team Director, Andrea Sparks, says migrant children are subject to a “perfect storm of vulnerability.” She says advocates are standing by statewide to provide services to exploited children.
Governor Abbott is also at odds with the Biden Administration becuase they have not answered which countries the kids are coming from, how long they’ll be here in Texas, and whether they’ve been tested for COVID-19.
“I urge President Biden do not traumatize these children by enticing them to make this trek" said the Governor. "We must get to the bottom of human trafficking & put an end to it.”
