Mesquite city leaders approve new budget, slightly lower tax rate

Mesquite city leaders have approved a new budget for the upcoming fiscal year that totals more than $306 million.

The Mesquite city council unanimously approved the budget which includes a new tax rate that's five cents lower than the current rate.

The budget calls for $306.7 million in spending, that's about a 5.5 percent increase from this year.

According to a report all city workers will be getting a three percent raise. The city also plans to hire at least 9 more firefighters and 2 more police officers including an additional school resource officer.

Additional staffing will be sought for Economic Development, Municipal Court, Public Safety Dispatch, Solid Waste, Parks Maintenance and Code Enforcement.

The mayor says the budget was approved after hearing from the people who live in Mesquite and the new budget includes money for road repairs, parks improvments and public safety projects, all things citizens requested.

The new new fiscal year starts October 1st.
