Paxton defeats Bush in primary runoff for GOP attorney general nomination

Incumbent Ken Paxton defeated challenger George P. Bush Tuesday in the primary election runoff to become the Republican nominee for Texas Attorney General.

Bush conceded in a tweet posted at 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Paxton, a two-term incumbent, has faced very various legal challenges during his tenure. In 2015, he was indicted on securities fraud charges, but has yet to stand trial; he faced an FBI investigation into corruption in his office; and earlier this month, Paxton said the State Bar of Texas was planning to sue him over his attempt to overturn the 2020 presidential election.

Bush was elected Texas Land Commissioner in 2014 and is the son of former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R) and grandson of former U.S. President George H.W. Bush (R).

While both candidates said they support Donald Trump, Paxton is the one who earned the endorsement of the former president.

Forty-one percent of likely voters in the Republican primary said they would support Paxton, according to the latest Dallas Morning News/University of Texas at Tyler poll. Thirty-five percent said they would vote for Bush and 24% responded: "don't know."

The top two responses to why a voter would support Paxton were job performance (34%) and that he's not a Bush (15%). The top responses as to why a voter would select Bush were integrity (26%) and that he's not Paxton (23%).
