Former Vice President Mike Pence spoke at a church in Dallas Sunday to promote his autobiography. He spoke during a service with Robert Jeffress, senior pastor at First Baptist Dallas.
"The calling of my life, and of our lives, has always been public service," he said of choosing the title for his book, So Help Me God.
Pence said he "couldn't be more proud" of the work of the Trump Administration, saying the administration strengthened the military, secured the border and "revived our economy."
"I couldn't be more proud to have been a small part of an administration that appointed three Supreme Court justices who just last year gave us a new beginning for the right to life," he said.
Pence acknowledged the administration "did not end well." He says his job January 6, 2021 was only to preside over a joint session of Congress to open and count electoral votes certified by states, "no more, no less."
"We knew we were where we were supposed to be, doing what we were supposed to be doing, whatever the consequences of that," Pence said. "The Lord sustained us through that time. Thanks to the courage of law enforcement officers, the violence was quelled."
Pence said he shared concerns about states that had changed election rules, but he said after court challenges failed, his "duty was clear, and I expressed that clearly to the president and the White House."
"My faith informed me and sustained me on that day," he said. "The Bible says in Psalm 15, 'He keeps his oath even when it hurts.' I have some familiarity with that."
Pence last appeared at First Baptist Dallas in 2020.
