Race for Texas Railroad Commissioner flaring up

You might have to do a double-take when you look down the ballot and see the race for a spot on the Texas Railroad Commission.

The TRC doesn't have anything to do with railroads anymore, but functions as the state agency regulating the enormous oil and gas production industry in Texas.

Republican candidate Jim Wright beat incumbent Ryan Sitton in the GOP Primary in March.

Wright says he's running on keeping fossil fuels production going strong in Texas.

"Oil and gas is our foundation of our economy," says Wright. "An attempt to abolish fossil fuel today would cripple Texas."

Democratic candidate Chrysta Castañeda is trying to challenge Wright for a spot on a commission that tends to lean to the right.

Castañeda's main position is her concern for the proliferation of flaring of natural gas, which she wants to bring under control.

"For over 100 years flaring...has been illegal," Castañeda says. "I want to get that under control. The Railroad Commission has been allowing operators to flare natural gas, and if we converted it to electricity, it would power the city of Houston continuously."

For Wright's part, he says the flaring is a minor issue.

"Today, out of all the production we do, we're only flaring 0.47%, says Wright.

He also adds, he hasn't seen proof that flaring negatively impacts the environment.

Castañeda feels differently.

"Texans know that they don't want to waste our precious resources," says Castañeda. "Texans want clean water, clean air, and 'Don't Mess with Texas.'"
