Senator Ted Cruz has introduced a bill pushing for donations to public and private schools.

The Universal School Choice Act would allow up to $10-billion in federal tax credits for people and businesses that contribute to nonprofit scholarship granting organizations.

Cruz's office says the point of the bill is to enhance universal school choice and options for students regardless of where they live.

"School choice is the civil rights issue of the 21st century," Cruz said in a statement. "Every child in America deserves access to a qualify education that meets their individual needs, regardless of race, ethnicity, income, or zip code."

The move comes after school choice became law in Texas.

Opponents of school choice have been very vocal about the price tag.
