19-year-old Damiana Humphrey took matters into her own hands while fending off a shark attack while swimming off the coast of Galveston last month.

While swimming with family near Jamaica Beach, Humphrey was attacked by a shark, with the creature biting her hand before she started defending herself.

Humphrey told FOX 26 Houston, “As I was turning, a shark grabbed a hold of my hand.  I looked down and there was a shark attached to my hand, so I guess I started punching it. That part is kind of blurry to me.”

Humphrey was able to escape the shark’s clutches and proceeded to get her young siblings to safety on the shore.  The teen was taken to the University of Texas Medical Branch and had surgery performed on her hand.

Despite suffering four severed tendons in her hand, Humphrey is expected to make a full recovery.
