Texans from San Antonio to Abilene were treated to a dazzling light show Monday evening when a bright fireball streaked across the night sky.

Videos and photos shared on social media showed a glowing trail cutting through the atmosphere, sparking questions about whether it was a meteor. But experts now believe the phenomenon was most likely space debris burning up as it reentered Earth’s atmosphere.

The fireball was visible across a wide swath of the state, with reports of sightings stretching for hundreds of miles. Scientists say events like this are rare but not unheard of, and they often go unnoticed unless the debris burns brightly enough to light up the sky.

No damage or injuries were reported from the fiery display.
