A 17-vehicle crash on Interstate 35 in North Austin left five people dead and 11 others injured overnight, police say.

Austin police confirmed that the crash occurred late Thursday night, claiming the lives of three adults, one child, and one infant. Seven of the 11 injured were reported to be in critical condition.

Austin-Travis County EMS Captain Christa Stedman said crews responded swiftly to the scene, but the severity of the crash made rescue efforts challenging.

The crash site remained closed Friday morning as investigators worked to determine the cause of the collision and clear the roadway. Crews were also addressing a diesel spill caused by the crash, officials said.

Motorists were advised to seek alternate routes as the investigation and cleanup continued.
