As the Super Bowl approaches, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) has expressed support for legalizing sports betting in the state.
In an interview with the Houston Chronicle, Abbott said he is ready to back efforts to allow sports gambling, aligning with recent public opinion polls that show increasing support for the measure.
Rice University political analyst Mark Jones, who conducted the polling, noted that the casino industry has been investing heavily in Texas to sway Republican lawmakers, many of whom have historically been cautious about gambling’s potential negative effects.
Any move to legalize sports betting would require a public vote to amend the state constitution.
