Former U.S. Rep. Colin Allred is sharply criticizing Texas state Rep. James Talarico after a video posted online alleges Talarico described Allred as a “mediocre Black man” during a private conversation, and Allred is urging voters to back U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett in the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate.
The exchange unfolded Monday as tensions rose in the hotly contested March 3 primary, with the allegation circulating on social media and prompting on-the-record responses from both camps.
The claim stems from a now-viral TikTok video in which a political content creator said she spoke with Talarico on Jan. 12 and quoted him saying he signed up to run “against a mediocre Black man,” referring to Allred, and not “a formidable, intelligent Black woman,” meaning Crockett.
In response Monday, Allred released a video calling out Talarico and endorsing Crockett, while Talarico’s team called the characterization a misrepresentation of his private remarks, saying he intended to critique Allred’s campaign strategy and not his life or service.
