It's the 2024 report on the State of Tobacco Control and it's how the American Lung Association grades individual states and the federal government on what's being done to eliminate tobacco use and save lives.
Texas gets a grade of "F" when it comes to prevention funding and smoke-free air, but improved to a grade of "D" when it comes to offering access to programs that help people quit using tobacco.
Another area Texas is failing is when it comes to flavored tobacco products. The American Lung Association wants them gone, saying they encourage kids to start smoking. The ALA is also calling for a total ban on Menthol cigarettes claiming those products specifically target communities of color.
Tobacco use is still the leading cause of preventable death and disease in the U.S. claiming an estimated 480,000 lives every year.
