Police, who were in the area working on a DWI, ran to the sound of the gunshots. There a police officer fired his gun in response.

"The two groups fired at each other, which is why I say it's unknown right now whether the officer struck someone or [if] that individual was struck by someone else's gunfire," Austin Police Chief Joseph Chacon said.

The groups involved in the shooting ran away, but two people were later arrested and a handgun was recovered.

Police attempted to perform life-saving measures on the victim before he was taken to hospital, where he later died.

A police officer has since been placed on administrative duty as an investigation takes place. This is considered standard protocol in such instances.
