Temperatures are starting to rise in Texas, and it couldn’t come sooner for many even after an unseasonably warm winter. With spring right around the corner, many Texans are gearing up for bluebonnet season. However, this year there may not be as much time to prepare, as some bluebonnets have already begun to bloom.
Bluebonnets normally don’t begin to bloom throughout Texas until late March and early April. However, after this winter set records for warm weather, including 7th warmest January on record globally, some bluebonnets have already begun to pop up.
“The warm, sunny weather is what triggers how soon they bloom. Last year, for example, it was a little unusually cold [in Austin], so they came out a lot later than they are this year,” said Andrea DeLong-Amaya, director of horticulture at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.
According to Dallas Culture Map, Spots in Austin and Houston have already begun to see bluebonnets bloom, while DFW is expected to see more in the coming weeks. The Ennis Bluebonnet Trails even posted last month that bluebonnets were beginning to emerge. It seems this year, spring is starting early.
