A high school band director in East Texas has resigned after the district instructed teachers to display the Ten Commandments in classrooms, following a new state law.
The Carthage ISD educator told CBS19 that he chose to step down rather than comply with the order, saying he could not post the religious text as required. The directive came after Texas lawmakers passed a law earlier this year mandating that public schools display the Ten Commandments if donated copies are available.
Carthage ISD, located near the Louisiana border, is among the first districts reported to begin enforcing the measure. The district has not commented publicly on the resignation.
The law has sparked debate over church-state boundaries and is already facing legal challenges from civil liberties groups.
