A San Jacinto County deputy was shot and killed while working security at a Houston mall on Wednesday, police say.
The gunman was later fatally shot by police, Houston Police Chief Troy Finner said.
Constable Neal Adams was working an off-duty security job at a shopping mall when he was involved in a confrontation. He was pronounced dead at an area hospital, police said.
Investigators said they did not know yet what started the confrontation.
Early Thursday morning, dozens of Texas police squad cars and motorcycle officers escorted Adams' body from the hospital to the medical examiner's office.
