A customs agent from El Paso faces the possibility of life in prison after he was arrested on human smuggling and drug charges.

The border protection officer was arrested for trying to make illicit profits by smuggling undocumented immigrants, and for selling drugs. 32-year-old Manuel Perez Jr. conspired with those he should have been arresting in a drug and human-smuggling operation from late 2023 until he was busted this month.

According to federal and state officials in West Texas, Perez faces up to life in prison for a host of conspiracy charges for his role in human smuggling and cocaine distribution.
