We've talked a LOT about the price of eggs over the last few years. But what about their colors. Have you ever wondered why chicken eggs come in different colors?
According to Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, the color of a hen’s earlobes can help determine the color of its eggs.
Yes, hens have earlobes — small and usually hidden beneath their feathers — and they come in different colors depending on the breed, typically white or red.
Egg color is determined by genetics. Hens with white earlobes usually lay white eggs, while those with darker earlobes tend to lay brown or colored eggs. With the pigment deposited on the shell as the egg forms.
Some hens even produce olive-colored eggs, which come from both brown and blue breeds.
As for speckles on eggs, they’re usually caused by extra calcium deposits. While there are several possible reasons for speckling, speckled eggs are sometimes stronger than smooth ones.
