Texas saw twice as many earthquakes in 2021, compared to the year prior, according to research by the Bureau of Economic Geology at the University of Texas at Austin.
The Texas Tribune reported that it found Texas had endured more than 200 quakes that hit above a three on the Richter scale. That set a new record for the state. It's also eight times higher than the number of similar events in 2017.
Most of those quakes hit in the Permian Basin. The researchers say that the spike in quakes is likely caused by continued fracking for oil in West Texas.
