A Houston attorney has been charged with murdering his own son after he claims it was an accident.
Michael C. Howard admitted to killing his son Mark Howard at the family's east Texas estate calling it a "horrible accident." Investigators say he and his 20-year-old son who was diagnosed with Down syndrome were at the family lake house, when he accidentally shot and killed his own son thinking he was an intruder.
Michael told them he took his son's body and put it in the front loading bucket of a back-hoe tractor and then, reportedly put Mark's body on a wood pile and proceeded to set it on fire.
Michael said he cremated the body because he felt it was what his son would have wanted. The Sabine County Sheriff's Office said 17 hours passed between the deadly shooting and Howard calling it in.
Howard is charged with murder and tampering with evidence. He remains in custody on a $20 million bond.
