Houston voters went to the polls on Saturday and gave State Senator John Whitmire a victory over U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee in the runoff election for Houston's mayor.
Both candidates were Democrats.
John Whitmire's election to become Houston's Mayor is being considered a promotion, after serving as the Texas lawmaker who has represented the Houston area for 50 years.
