A Laredo man accused of illegally purchasing firearms has been returned to the United States after fleeing to Mexico to avoid prosecution, federal authorities said.

Jesus Guadalupe Covarrubias, 39, of Laredo, and several associates had been buying guns in Texas since 2019, prosecutors said. In 2021, he was caught on surveillance footage loading firearms into a truck, leading to his arrest.

Covarrubias was released on bond but later fled to Mexico. Prosecutors said he has since been extradited to face charges. As a convicted felon, he was prohibited from purchasing firearms or ammunition.

If convicted, he could face up to 10 years in prison.
