(SAN ANTONIO) - At least 53 people were found dead in a tractor-trailer in Southwest San Antonio on Monday, according to a report by KSAT.

The bodies found in the abandoned tractor-trailer are believed to be migrant workers. Multiple others were found alive and taken to nearby hospital, according to officials on the scene.

The dozens of bodies were discovered when San Antonio Police were searching for the driver of the 18-wheeler.

San Antonio's heatwave reached record breaking temperatures in the past few weeks, including 18 days of over 100-degree temperatures.

According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, dangerous environmental conditions couples with extreme temperatures pose life-threatening risks for migrants attempting to cross the border illegally. All of the deceased are believed to have entered into the United States illegally.

The Department of Homeland Security is reportedly set to take over the investigation. This story is still developing.
