Officials say 21-year-old Demetrious Pagourtzis will remain at the North Texas State Hospital in Vernon for at least another twelve months after a judge on Friday determined he is not yet mentally competent to stand trial.

The question is not whether he was competent the day of the shooting but only whether he is sufficiently competent to assist in his own defense.

In May of 2018, Pagourtzis was still a student at Santa Fe when the shooting took place.

If he comes to trial, he would not be facing the death penalty because he was 17-years-old, a juvenile at the time.
