After weeks with little to no rain, much of Texas is seeing worrying levels of drought -- and the return of wildfires. As of Friday morning, just two fires were burning and one of them is pretty small. It's about five acres near Nacogdoches and it's just about 100% contained.
However, there's a much bigger one in Palo Pinto County. The Lazy Fire isn't really that lazy. It's already blackened 750 acres south of Possum Kingdom Lake and it's only about 10% contained. State Highway 16 is closed at Highway 180, about 30 miles southwest of Mineral Wells.
That's an area densely covered by juniper which is fueling the fast-moving fire. As for the drought, the U.S. Drought Monitor puts nearly all of Texas in a range from Abnormally Dry to Exceptional Drought. The only exceptions are along the Coastal Bend, far South Texas, and a little bit of far West Texas.
