The Pentagon announced that 3,000 additional combat troops are being deployed to the U.S. southern border as part of President Donald Trump's efforts to curb illegal immigration.

The deployment, ordered by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, includes forces from a Stryker Brigade Combat Team and a General Support Aviation Battalion, the Department of Defense said in a statement. The troops will “reinforce and expand current border security operations to seal the border and protect the territorial integrity of the United States,” a defense department statement said.

The latest deployment adds to the more than 9,000 U.S. troops already stationed along the border. That includes approximately 4,200 active-duty service members deployed under federal orders and an additional 5,000 National Guard troops sent by state governors.

The move comes amid ongoing efforts by the Trump administration to tighten border security, a key issue in the president’s immigration policy.
