Texas is on the verge of launching the largest school choice program in the nation, according to Gov. Greg Abbott, as the State House Public Education Committee advanced a key bill to the full House for a vote.

Senate Bill 2, sponsored by State Rep. Brad Buckley, would establish $10,000 education savings accounts for parents to use toward private school tuition.

The program’s cost is projected to reach $7 billion in the next biennium. House Democrats have opposed the measure, arguing the funds should instead be directed toward underfunded public schools.

Despite opposition, Abbott has expressed confidence that the bill has enough support to pass the House.
