The Texas Senate files its version of Governor Abbott's priority school choice voucher bill

We're getting our first look at Governor Abbott's proposed school voucher plan. State Senator Brandon Creighton filed Senate Bill 2 at the State Capitol.

The 33-page bill would establish an Education Savings Account giving Texas students $10,000 in taxpayer money to fund a private school education. The legislation is similar to that filed by Creighton in 2023. He released the following statement:

"Texas families are rejecting the status quo and calling for an education system that prioritizes their children's success. Senate Bill 2 places parents at the center of their child's education, empowering them with the freedom to choose the educational path that works best for their families."

Democrats fought the school choice voucher legislation in 2023 arguing that it would take money away from the already cash-strapped Texas public schools. On the Senate floor State Senator Roland Gutierrez pushed back against Creighton saying, "We are 43rd in school funding. We are 43rd in school performance in this nation.

Republicans have been in control in this state for 30 years and are responsible for those dangerous settings and those dangerous schools."

The first committee hearing at the State Capitol on Senate Bill 2 is set for Tuesday, January 28th.
