A Lubbock area business owner is giving out kits to help women, and that's upset some locals.

Destiny Adams is the co-owner of Tumble + Safe coffeehouse in Wolfforth, ten miles outside the center of the Hub City. These kits are put together by Jane’s Due Process. The Texas-based nonprofit helps teens access abortions and reproductive health care. Each is valued at about $100 and includes Plan B, condoms and pregnancy tests.

In the bathroom hygiene products including tampons, pads, diapers, baby wipes, deodorant and toothpaste are free. She says some of the locals don't like the Plan B part. "People called the Wolfforth police on us, telling them that we were dealing drugs, that were were handing out illegal substances, that we were handing out the abortion pill.

The so-called Morning After pill does not cause an abortion. It does, however, prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex by halting ovulation. In post Roe V Wade Texas, it is perfectly legal. It is sold over the counter in drug stores and does not require a prescription to people over the age of 17.

"We did all our research to make sure we were in the clear to be handing out Plan B because, honestly, why would I risk my livelihood and my business to do something that political?"

Lubbock is a very pro-life city.  A measure to make it a "sanctuary city for the unborn passed by 62% and went into effect in May of 2021.

Some people have also protested outside the shop, holding photos of aborted fetuses.  Adams grew up in Lubbock in a Catholic family and attended church every Sunday.  "No one was ever rude to me growing up having different beliefs.  It was crazy to see that people were using religion as a way of stopping other people from taking care of their personal health."
