Small-town hospitals across Texas are looking for ways to stay in business in the face of growing financial troubles that could force many to shut down.

Many rural hospitals rely heavily on Medicare to reimburse them for the cost of caring for patients, but the amount that Medicare pays generally does not cover the full cost of most procedures.

Anson General Hospital CEO Ted Matthews says that's putting a financial strain on smaller hospitals and could force some of them to shut down.

Matthews testified at a hearing of the House Ways and Means Committee in Denton where lawmakers were focused on ensuring access to health care.
