A lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union challenging a Texas law aimed at regulating online pornography will be heard by the U.S. Supreme Court.
The law requires visitors to adult websites to verify their age by providing personal information, such as a government-issued ID, if the site contains more than one-third sexually explicit content.
Vera Eidelman, a staff attorney for the ACLU of Texas, stated that the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals found the law must be reasonable in its intent to protect minors.
As a result of the law, popular adult site Pornhub has been rendered unavailable in Texas. Eidelman warned that the legislation could set a precedent for regulating other forms of media, potentially impacting R-rated films and sex education materials.
The outcome of this case could have significant implications for free speech and online privacy.
