Speaking from the steps of San Antonio City Hall, US Congressman Joaquin Castro called a trade war potentially destructive to the Texas economy.

“Today we’re here to call on Texas Republicans who haven't spoken up to end their silence and stand up for San Antonio and Texas.”

Castro added that he’s not expecting any help from Texas Governor Greg Abbott. “Governor Abbott knows these tariffs will badly damage the state’s economy, but you won’t hear a peep from him. Over the last few days, he’s been too busy getting into a Twitter fight with Canada’s prime minister.”

Responding to a Tweet suggesting that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was going to retaliate against President Trump’s tariffs with tariffs of their own Abbott wrote, “Careful Trudeau. The Texas economy is larger than Canada’s. And we’re not afraid to use it.”

Castro was joined in the press conference by Mayor Ron Nierenberg, and State Senators Roland Gutierrez and Jose Menendez.
