State troopers on horseback are now patrolling South Texas as part of efforts to intercept individuals crossing the U.S.-Mexico border illegally.

DPS officials say the mounted units are designed to navigate terrain inaccessible to vehicles, targeting areas often used by smugglers guiding migrants around border checkpoints.
