A key Texas House committee is set to take up the Senate’s school choice voucher bill Thursday, a measure that would provide parents with $10,000 per child to use for private school tuition.
The House Public Education Committee will consider Senate Bill 2, which is designated as a companion bill to fast-track its potential approval. The move comes weeks after the House left its own version, House Bill 3, pending in committee.
Gov. Greg Abbott has been a vocal proponent of school choice, pushing for legislation that would allow public funds to follow students to private schools. However, House Democrats are working to weaken the measure and are seeking Republican lawmakers willing to oppose it.
It remains unclear whether the bill has enough support to pass the full House.
