School choice has been a top priority for Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) since 2023. On Wednesday, the Texas House prepares to take up Senate Bill 2, which would provide parents with taxpayer money to spend on private education.

Seventy-six House members signed on as sponsors, just enough to pass the measure, and supporters believe Tuesday could mark a turning point.

Abbott has championed the plan as a way to increase parental choice in education.

In a last-ditch effort to stop the bill, 50 House Democrats are threatening to block all future constitutional amendments this session unless Republicans agree to put the voucher measure before voters in a November referendum.

If passed, the bill would represent a significant shift in Texas education policy, with wide-ranging implications for public schools across the state.
