
The Texas Land Commissioner is expected to announce the state's plans to take over a small island in the Rio Grande river.
The Texas National Guard and Department of Public Safety both sent personnel to secure Fronton Island along the Texas-Mexico border last year.
Officials with the Texas Military Department said it had been used by cartels in Mexico for smuggling operations involving narcotics, weapons, money, and high-value individuals plus large groups of illegal immigrants.
Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham is scheduled to visit McAllen this afternoon to discuss plans to acquire the island.
