A bill to double the money spent on film and TV production in Texas is moving forward.

Senate Bill 22, filed by State Senator Joan Huffman, would allocate $500 million every two years for the next decade to create a new Texas Moving Image Industry Incentive Fund. The effort to expand TV and film production in Texas has received strong bipartisan support and passed the Senate with a 23-8 vote.

Texas natives, including actor Matthew McConaughey, have voiced support for offering stronger incentives to film in the state. Huffman’s bill also includes an additional 2.5% incentive for faith-based productions, a provision that has drawn criticism. Opponents argue that terms like “faith-based” or “family values” are too subjective. The bill now heads to the House for consideration.
