President Donald Trump took to Truth Social on Thursday to claim Walmart’s 2025 Holiday Meal proves his policies deliver lower prices than Democrats’.
“2025 Thanksgiving dinner under Trump is 25% lower than 2024 Thanksgiving dinner under Biden,” Trump wrote, adding that Democrats’ “affordability issue is DEAD.”
But Walmart’s 2025 Holiday Meal isn’t directly comparable to last year’s version.
The 2025 basket includes 15 items — down from 21 in 2024 — and omits staples such as pecan pie, cranberry sauce, whipped cream, mini marshmallows, corn muffin mix, and several fresh produce items.
The retailer also swapped many name-brand products for its lower-cost Great Value brand, and some items may seem cheaper due to 'shrinkflation,' meaning a 4.5 oz can of Fried onions was now priced the same as a 6 oz can was a year ago. Walmart’s website revealed that while the price of Walmart’s Holiday Meal has decreased due to the removal of items, the actual grocery prices have remained pretty much the same.
Walmart’s 2024 Holiday Meal served eight people for under $7 each, or about $55 total. The same items at 2025 prices would cost about $52.43 before tax, a difference of roughly 5%, not 25%.
