Two Bexar County sheriff’s deputies were shot and wounded during a domestic disturbance call early Sunday in north Bexar County, authorities said.

Deputies were called to a home for a reported domestic disturbance involving a man who was estranged from his family, according to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office. The woman who lives at the home was able to escape with her two young children and call 911 after the suspect forced his way inside.

When deputies arrived, the man was still inside the home. As they attempted to make contact, the suspect produced a weapon and opened fire, striking both deputies, Sheriff Javier Salazar said.

The deputies returned fire, killing the suspect, Salazar said.

Both deputies were taken to University Hospital, where they were listed in stable condition. One deputy has more than 10 years of service with the sheriff’s office, while the other has been with the department for about two years.

The suspect was described as a 38-year-old man. His identity has not been released.
