Texas Democrats are pushing back against Governor Greg Abbott’s emergency item call for a school choice voucher plan.
From an Austin elementary school on the verge of closing due to budget deficits, State House Democrats made their case against the governor’s $1 billion voucher plan.
Abbott’s plan would give parents $10,000 to pay for their child to attend a private school. State Rep James Talerico says Abbott’s been bought out by billionaires who want to privatize Texas Schools.
"So now Greg Abbott is starving our public schools and pushing a private school voucher scam, which will take even more money out of schools like this one and put it in the hands of millionaires and billionaires," Talerico says.
The Governor did block additional funding to public schools last session when school choice vouchers failed to pass in the State House. Abbott also received a $6 million donation from a pro-voucher billionaire from Philadelphia.
