The University of Texas at Austin is tightening its admissions policy for high school seniors in Texas. Starting this year, the university will lower the automatic admission threshold from the top 6% to the top 5% of a student's high school graduating class.
UT Austin has long had a policy granting automatic admission to students who graduated in the top 6% of their high school class. This policy, initially set by state lawmakers for the top 10%, has been adjusted over the years to allow the university to admit a broader range of students, including those from out-of-state.
University President Jay Hartzell cited a sharp increase in applications as a key factor driving the change. With the number of applicants rising, the university is implementing the new top 5% threshold to manage the growing demand and ensure a more competitive admissions process.
