SAN ANTONIO (1080 KRLD)- The University of Texas System Board of Regents announces a huge merger of two of its schools starting next year.

The University of Texas San Antonio and UT Health San Antonio will become one in a deal approved yesterday by the system board of regents. UTSA President Tyler Eighmy was elected by regents to be the president of the new university.

The newly-combined institutions will become the third-largest research university in the state. Chairman Kevin Eltife said, "By bringing together all of their complementary and unique strengths, we will give Texans access to the best education, discoveries and health care imaginable, while accelerating the university's trajectory as a top U.S. and global university."
